High Fructose Corn Syrup
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a very common sweetener that is found in almost all sodas, processed foods, baked goods, pasta sauce, and just about anything you can think of! There is tons of scientific evidence as to just how bad this stuff is for you, much more than just being an empty calorie. Sugar consumption leads to weight gain, increases the risk of diabetes and heart disease as it raises triglyceride levels, it also stimulates your cravings for more and more sugary foods. Fructose is not essential to the functioning of the body in any way, shape, or form. The only organ in our bodies that can actually metabolize fructose is the liver and when it gets overloaded, it tends to cause health problems, especially in the way of elevated blood sugar levels. Your liver will try to deal with it the only way it knows how; it stores it, either in your body fat or in the liver itself. With enough fat, the liver will develop a disease known as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. There is no cure.
Although this is a staple in most pantries, the sad fact is, white bread doesn’t have any nutritional value whatsoever but it certainly does contain sugar. Refined carbs like white bread spike your blood sugar levels in much the same way a candy bar does. When food is refined, the way white flour is, all vital nutrients are destroyed. When it comes to bread, once you have removed the most nutritious part of the grain, it’s not that much different from sugar. There is another factor that many people tend to forget when it comes to their bread; from beginning to end, this food is a pesticide disaster. The seeds are first treated with fungicides, and then the sprouting plants are sprayed again with hormones and pesticides. Even the very containers that wheat is stored in are lined with pesticides. All of these chemicals contribute to your overall toxic load, more than your liver was designed to handle, and this is sure to cut years off your life.
Yes, we know, fried chicken on Sunday afternoons is a tradition in many households, but that chicken, fried in high temperatures with GMO vegetable oil, might earn you a tradition in a shorter lifespan.
Fried foods are associated with higher cholesterol lives, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, higher incidence of strokes, and obesity, which can also lead to diabetes and other health issues. Foods that are fried using highly processed vegetable oils create trans-fats, and those high temperatures cause a highly carcinogenic substance called acrylamide to form.
It’s much more than just those burgers, fries, and fried chicken, however. Other fried foods include donuts, potato chips, fish, onion rings, turkeys (You know those deep fryers for Thanksgiving turkey), shrimp, oysters, pork skins (chicharron), and liver.
Cream Based Salad Dressings
Many people turn to salads when trying to lose weight or eat healthier meals and salads can be great for both of these reasons. Unfortunately, many people take an otherwise healthy, low calorie salad and pour a ton of creamy salad dressing over it, completely ruining their intentions.
Cream based salad dressings contain everything you want to avoid such as sugar, salt, fats, and excessive calories. One of the problems with salad dressings is portion size. If you read the labels, most portion sizes are listed at 2 tablespoons, which is such a small amount it’s highly unlikely that anyone uses that little on an average salad. If you are thinking that low fat dressings are better for you, think again. Salad dressings that are low in fat typically use sugar to improve the flavor and they can actually prevent the body from absorbing the carotenoid antioxidants in the tomatoes and greens. Your body needs some fat in order to absorb those good nutrients that your body needs.
For the healthiest salad, look for dressings that contain the smallest amount of ingredients. These will usually be oil based dressings. Or you might try to use plain lemon juice.
Ramen noodles, sometimes called cup of noodles, are a popular food item because they are fast, easy to make, and are super cheap. Unfortunately, they have been linked in several studies to diabetes and heart attacks. One study showed that eating these instant type noodle products can greatly increase your risk for cardio metabolic syndrome, especially for women.
This was a large study that involved more than 10,000 adults between the ages of 19 and 64, and was conducted over 2 years. This study found that eating these types of noodles, whether they be lo mein, Thai, or ramen, more than twice a week was associated with a much higher risk of developing cardio metabolic syndrome. This is a series of abnormalities that affects the cardio, renal, and metabolic systems within the body. The results of this study were published in the Journal of Nutrition. This isn’t the first study that showed the problems with these types of noodles. A video taken in 2012 showed what happened from inside the human digestive tract after eating instant ramen soups and it isn’t pretty. You can watch the video here yourself:
